Chris Frederick is an Associate Teaching Professor of Data Science in the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame, where he teaches R for Data Science, Python for AI and Data Science, and Databases and Data Architecture in the online Master of Science in Data Science program. Alongside Roger Woodard, he co-teaches the program's capstone sequence, in which student teams partner with industry clients to execute end-to-end data science projects from problem formulation through modeling and final delivery.
His research focuses on knowledge engineering, business discovery, agentic AI, and mapping the American industrial base at scale to help domestic small businesses connect with the needs of the defense sector. As Principal Investigator on sponsored research supporting Department of Defense efforts, he leads projects focused on agent-driven knowledge extraction, autonomous workflow automation, and manufacturing intelligence.
Chris is also the Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Code Works, a South Bend digital product studio focused on projects with social impact and driven by the principle that technology should improve lives. In this role, he leads engineering for platforms focused on intelligent labor market matching, nonprofit fundraising (including GiveGrove, launched to support the Center for the Homeless), K–12 computer science education via the South Bend Code School, and the Digital Storefront Program, which partners with local governments to help hundreds of small businesses establish their digital presence. Across these initiatives, his work centers on designing agentic systems that leverage AI to automate complex processes and drive operational efficiency.
His academic work builds on two decades of enterprise data experience. At Notre Dame, Chris managed the Business Intelligence team in the Office of Information Technology and directed the Data-Driven Decision-Making program, leading the creation of the University’s Enterprise Data Warehouse, Knowledge Graph, and Data Governance Program. Prior to Notre Dame, he was a lead developer at Walgreens Health Care Alliance, where he built mail-order automation and inventory systems.
Chris holds an M.S. in Data Science from Indiana University and a B.S. in Computer Software Systems from Saint Louis University.
