Michael Chapple

What new security threats do big data bring about and how can we design our information systems to protect against them? As an IT leader, information security professional, author, and educator, Professor Mike Chapple has dedicated his career to developing information security solutions and policies for higher education institutes.

A leading contributor to the higher education IT community, Professor Chapple has served as the chair of the Common Solutions Group Cloud Strategy Working Group which produced the Cloud Strategy for Higher Education. Prof. Chapple also serves as the chair of the EDUCAUSE Recognition Committee, Co-Chair of the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research Cloud Working Group, and a member of the EDUCAUSE Governance, Risk and Compliance Advisory Board. In 2014, he was selected as a Fellow of the Leading Change Institute.

In 2016, Professor Chapple was appointed academic director of Notre Dame’s Master of Science in Business Analytics program. Based in the IT, Analytics and Operations Department of the Mendoza College of Business, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in business analytics and information security. Prior to joining Notre Dame’s faculty, Mike served as Senior Director for IT Service Delivery at the University. In this role, he oversaw the information security, IT compliance, cloud computing, data governance, IT architecture, learning platforms, project management, strategic planning, and product management functions for the Office of Information Technologies. Professor Chapple designed the Databases and Data Security course for the Notre Dame Online Master's in Data Science program.

A double-domer, Professor Chapple earned his BS and Ph.D. degrees from Notre Dame in Computer Science & Engineering. He also holds an MS in computer science from the University of Idaho and an MBA from Auburn University. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, backpacking, and camping and serves on the board of the North Country Trail Association.
